Continental Giants (Please Read)
The Continental Giant is one of the oldest and largest domestic rabbit breeds in the world. Some rabbits of this breed can weigh anywhere between 20lbs to 35lbs! Their ears stand upright and long with a minimum of 7 inches in length. It is considered a deformity to the breed if the ears lop over. This would cause the rabbit to be disqualified from a breed show. Continental Giants can get nearly three feet long with a minimum show length of 26 inches! Talk about a big deal! They come in a variety of colors ranging from Yellow, Black, Agouti, Light Steel, Dark Steel, White, and Opal.
Like any other domestic rabbit breed, Continental Giants require a lot of love and care in order to allow the owner to handle them on a regular basis. Continental's that are not properly cared for and treated can turn into mean, frightened rabbits that are almost impossible to handle. Constant love and attention are crucial to developing an affectionate and gentle rabbit. Ignoring the rabbit for days at a time, or just not providing it with clean facilities and proper nutrition can cause the rabbit to be mean and aggressive. When given the proper attention and care, the Continental Giant can be a very affectionate companion for years to come!
When looking into housing a Continental Giant, consideration needs to go towards this breeds massive size. A typical sized rabbit hutch certainly would not do. There are rabbit hutches designed for larger rabbits, which would be more appropriate. All of these options should be considered when investing in Continental Giants. For the free range option however, the pasture should be predator free as well as free of any plants or insects that could potentially harm the rabbit. Also, it should be taken into account that this breed can jump over very high fencing, so consideration towards tall fencing should be implemented. If hutches seem appropriate for the breeders situation, proper ventilation and heating/cooling should be taken into consideration.
